Description

Let's know the geological dangers of the Andean region - in Spanish

In 2004, the South American geological and mining services of the Andean region undertook, within the framework of the Multinational Andean Geosciences Project for Andean Communities (PMA-GCA), the preparation of a regional map of geological hazards at the scale of 1 / 7,500,000. Seven countries contributed to the development of this map under the general coordination of the Argentinian Geological and Mining Service, SEGEMAR: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

The objective of this publication is to bring to the attention of the general public, in an easily understandable language, the existence of risks of geological origin in the Andean region and to highlight the scientific studies carried out in this region.

The map presents a compilation of the greatest disasters of geological origin linked to endogenous (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanism) and exogenous (landslides, rockslides) processes.

The booklet that accompanies the map explains the geological processes that can be related to natural disasters, the factors that in one way or another contribute to or condition their location or development, such as the geological nature of the terrain, climate, vegetation, and also the location of people and infrastructure directly affected.

A description of the genesis and characteristics of each process is provided with examples of disasters that have occurred in the different Andean countries. These data are supplemented by an explanation of the role of geosciences in the study, control, prevention and reduction of natural disasters of geological origin.

Let's know the geological dangers of the Andean region - in Spanish

Los Servicios Geológicos y Mineros Sudamericanos, participants of the Proyecto Multinacional Andino Geociencias para las Comunidades Andinas (PMA-GCA) decided in 2004 to elaborate a regional map of geological peligros in the Andean region, at scale 1:7,500,000. We participated in the elaboration of the Servicios Geológicos y Mineros de Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú y Venezuela, together with the general coordination of the Servicio Geológico Minero Argentino (SEGEMAR).

The aims of the publication are to explain, for educational purposes, the existence of geological hazards in the Andean region and to highlight the importance of related scientific studies, in an accessible language aimed at the general public.
