Description

Seismic Atlas of the Messinian Salinity Crisis markers in the Mediterranean Sea - Vol.2

The Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) is a succession of extraordinary events that profoundly altered the Mediterranean region in a very short space of time on a geological scale. It led to the creation of one of the world's youngest and most controversial salt giants.

In 2011, the book "Seismic Atlas of the Messinian Salinity markers in the Mediterranean and Black seas" summarised, in a common-format publication, the most relevant seismic characteristics of the geological markers (depositional units and associated surfaces) linked to this exceptional event and currently observed in the marine environment.

This book has also proposed a new, global and coherent terminology for these seismic markers, describing and illustrating their facies, geometry and extension through 13 study sites located in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.

This second volume, entitledSeismic atlas of the Messinian salinity crisis markers in the Mediterranean Sea"is published as a continuation of Volume 1. It illustrates the seismic characteristics of Messinian markers through 18 new study areas, using the same colour code and terminology as in 2011.

The seismic data interpreted was carefully selected on the basis of its quality, position and importance in achieving these objectives. They are presented here. This new book also provides a revised map of the extent of Messinian markers in the marine domain on a Mediterranean scale.

The raw and interpreted seismic profiles presented in the book are available as images on the DVD included in 3ème cover.
